What does the Heart have to do with it?
Many people have heard about the connection between the gut and immunity. But, do you know that there is an even stronger connection between your HEART and your Immunity?
How so, you might ask?
Ayurveda offers a beautiful and poetical explanation that highlights this intimate relationship. According to Ayurveda, during pregnancy, a Mother starts exchanging OJAS (think of it as the fluid of longevity) with her baby weaving this precious substance back and forth through the walls of their Hearts. In fact, it is said that by the time you are born, your Mother will have placed 8 drops of OJAS in your Heart for you to use throughout your life, give you strength and enhanced immunity (what we now call innate immunity).
For years, I thought this was more of a metaphorical explanation.
It isn't so!
The new medical field of CARDIOIMMUNOLOGY is now discovering that immune cells infiltrate the human Heart during gestation and remain in the myocardium throughout life. These immune cells participate in what has been defined as essential housekeeping functions. So, when your Mother tells you that you are in her Heart, she really means it!
Cultures throughout the world and throughout the ages have placed enormous importance on this body/mind/spirit center we call our Heart. In fact, even in our everyday language we pay homage to our beating energetic master: The English language alone uses more than 70 idioms all containing the word "Heart". From "My Heart is broken" to "I don't have the Heart", as humans, we recognize our Heart's health status intuitively and often can just tell when something feels off.
When the Heart isn't happy, nothing works in our life! It is as simple as that!
How can we help our Heart on a daily basis? How can we experience more health, longevity and bliss through the balancing of this vital center?
Ayurveda offers a simple and pleasurable therapy we can administer daily to ourselves. Massaging Hridaya Marma (or the Heart Center/channel) can bring tremendous benefits to body/mind/spirit.
Traditional Chinese Medicine calls this center CV17 or Sea of Tranquillity.
Hridaya Marma therapy has the power to influence the health of our Plasma, Blood, Sadhaka Pitta (the power of the mind), Vyana and Prana Vayus (overall powers of vitality and circulation), Ojas (strength and immunity), Tarpaka Kapha, Avalambaka Kapha (lubrication of the Heart and Lungs), Varuna Nadi and Anahata or the Heart Chakra. This is why the Heart Marma is considered one of the 3 Maha (great) Marma Points.
And, if this wasn't enough to grab your attention, Ayurveda also considers the Heart to be the seat of both mind (Chitta) and Consciousness (the higher Self or Atman).
Located in the chest region, Hridaya is the most important marma because from it comes the connection to all other Marmani (read energetic centers). The word CONNECTION is of utmost importance here. Hridaya is classified as a SIRA Marma (Sira means blood vessels) as veins form the predominant structure of this marma. From a medical anatomical perspective, Hridaya marma encompasses the following: The whole Heart and the 4 chambers, the Aorta and its branches, the Coronary arteries and veins, the Pericardium, the Mediastinum, the Pulmonary arteries and veins, the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava.
However, the power of connection governed by the Heart goes beyond the physical (pumping blood through the above-mentioned vessels) and embraces a greater concept. The health of our Heart speaks of the connection we feel to ourselves, others and the forces of the Divine. This connection (or lack of thereof) influences every single aspect of our life. We feel this. We can tell. When the Heart is out of balance nothing works. And again, modern science is taking notice. A recent meta-analysis published in 2016 in the international peer-reviewed journal "Heart" found that feelings of loneliness, social isolation or feeling unloved are risk factors for coronary Heart disease and stroke.
So, what is one to do?
Take Heart and a deep breath. Go within. CONNECT. Massage a small amount of Heart to Heart on Hridaya Marma in a circular motion. Once you feel the LOVE, it will be easier to CONNECT with others and back again to yourself in this eternal circle of LIFE.

Hridaya Marma is located at the center of the sternum, more specifically 14 finger widths from the center of the Navel. It is one of the largest Marmani (energetic points) measuring 4 anguli (or 4 finger widths), a unit equivalent to the length of your thumb.
Massage this delicious balm in a clockwise motion when attempting to strengthen the body, increase energy and get the circulation going (for example in melancholic or depressive states of sadness).
Massage Hridaya Marma in a counter-clockwise manner to reduce an excessive dosha, to detoxify and when there excess present in the form of anger, lack of patience, jealousy and overall irritation.
WHAT IS MARMA POINT THERAPY?
Marma Point Therapy, also called Marmani Chikitsa, is one of the many Ancient Healing Practices of Ayurvedic Medicine. It involves the stimulation of sensitive points to promote healing in the physical, mental, and energetic planes by affecting the flow of Prana or vital energy. Marma Points are receivers/transmitters of Prana, the Life Force that pervades the entire Universe. In this concentrated field of primordial energy, anatomical structures such as muscle, bone, tendon, vessels, ligaments, and joints are also present. Prana moves along channels called Nadis. Think of it this way: Nadis are the string, Marmani are the pearls of the necklace, and Prana is what allows the pearls to be beautifully strung together and shine with luster…
Marma Points are found on the skin’s surface, serving as a bridge between body, mind, and spirit. When you learn to touch a Marma Point a certain way, you can change your body’s biochemistry and unfold radical, alchemical changes in your makeup. Gentle touch can support the magical workings of our Inner Pharmacy. Marma Points can be found all over the body from the hands and feet to the trunk and head, and when manipulated via massage, pranic healing, oil and herb application, heat, or pressure, can “alter both the organic functions and structural conditions of the body” (Muley).
“Much like quantum mechanics, Ayurveda holds that a human being is not a solid, stable material structure but an ever-changing, dynamic collection of energy and intelligence in the larger field of energy and intelligence that is the universe.” Marma Point Therapy allows us to tap into this field….
